Ubuntu Podcast Episode #11

Audio files are coming soon! Show Notes:

  • Ubuntu 8.10 is out!
  • Order your Ubuntu 8.10 CDs from ShipIt
  • Matt Zimmerman, Canonical CTO has an interesting post about bugs
    • In September, over 7800 bugs were filed
    • 99% were resolved, either duplicates, fixed, invalid, etc.
    • Of course, there are still 46,000 open bugs still
    • Funny comments left on the blog: some saying Windows and Macs do better
    • Of course, I would like someone to tell me what the bug count is in Microsoft and Apples bug trackers. Oh wait, they won't release any of that info.
    • One comment was how there shouldn't be upgrades, just updates. Like how people have XP on their machines for years.
    • The terms upgrades and updates are probably used too loosely.
    • Multiple service packs over the years are huge and make lots of changes.
  • Ubuntu get slower?
    • Phoronix did some tests
      • But its not really Ubuntu's fault, looks like some of the upstream projects are the issue
      • Might be related to some video driver issues, compiler changes, and general kernel stuff
      • Phoronix tested with Fedora and also a slow down between 7 and upcoming 10.
  • Mark Shuttleworth does interview with media and analysts
    • Canonical isn't in the black yet
    • Employees over 120 people
    • Will probably require a few more years of funding
    • But there is lots of revenue coming in
    • Can Ubuntu survive without Canonical?
      • Are the community processes in place if something like that ever happened?
    • 8 million users, but now knows for sure since there is no "call-home" option like some other OSs
  • Obama campaign using Ubuntu? (this is not meant to be political)
    • someone from Fox pointed out that they use Ubuntu widely and so do the McCain folks
  • Dell 12" Mini Inspiron released in Japan
    • $999
    • Comes with Vista, "looking into Ubuntu"
    • "Dell cites the lack of connection managers for its telco partners under the Mini 12’s forthcoming 3G mobile broadband module as the reason Linux remains a no-show."

Another great podcast guys! Congrats You’ve come a long way since the first one and I will continue to keep an eye out here. It may be my imagination, but it looks like the “CIGARS” are getting bigger and darker. LOL Keep up the good work.

Enjoyed the podcast once again buys. I would like to comment though–that Nick should probably give up those cigars. –LOL

He looked like he was about to choke a couple of times on that stogie.

Thanks for the feedback everybody. I will mention to Nick about the cigars LOL. We definitely appreciate the support!

Hey everyone. This is Evan, the main code contributor for the current spreadubuntu project.

For those interested in the SpreadUbuntu project mentioned in this podcast, a very functional website has been made. The testing server is currently on ubuntu.ec, but will eventually be moved to spreadubuntu.com

We currently feature a very advanced multilingual system, so all materials can be shared worldwide. Since source files are given, as stated in the podcast, materials can be translated and adapated very easily.

At this point in development we could actually use some feedback, as well as some new materials.

The current, functional site:
http://ubuntu.ec/su/drupal5/

The launchpad project:
https://launchpad.net/spreadubuntu/

The launchpad team:

I have only been using Ubuntu for the past year and find the pod casts fantastic. They are informative and entertaining, so I will be watching all future casts. It is great to see that Ubuntu has a thriving community and to be a part of it. Keep up the good work boy’s and quit the smoking, so you will both last a bit longer.

Gaz.

About your Compiz-video-flicker problem:
- Install “compizconfig-settings-manager”
- Click System/Preferences/CompizConfig Settings Manager
- Click General Settings
- Switch to Tab Display Settings
- Enable “Sync To VBlank”

It should immediately fix your problems. Please let me know if it does.

Regards
Daniel

Daniel, thanks for the tip. I tried that but still get the flashing display, I can only make it go away thus far if I turn Visual Effects under appearance to “none”. I’ll keep working with it. Thanks for your comment though!

Gary on November 22, 2008 at 20:32

I get a similar problem with the visual effects turned on and also have no text at the top of writer eg file, edit etc. If i turn the visual effects off it clears all my problems. Looks like the graphics driver still needs some work. Can we have an update on the graphics drivers for Ibex.
